From hydrogen refinery pump stations to stormwater or wastewater solutions, Romtec Utilities' engineering and manufacturing expertise provides reliable, high-performance infrastructure for some of the most demanding environments in the Northeast.
Our recent project in Niagara Falls, New York, showcases how Romtec Utilities partners with industry leaders to power the next generation of clean energy.
SPOTLIGHT PROJECT
Hydrogen refinery pump station in Niagara Falls, New York
Romtec Utilities designed and supplied a hydrogen refinery pump station for a 35-megawatt Proton Exchange Membrane electrolyzer located in Niagara Falls, New York.
This project supports Linde, a global leader in clean hydrogen production, as the company expands its green hydrogen infrastructure throughout the United States. Once operational, this facility will be Linde's largest electrolyzer installation worldwide, powered entirely by renewable hydroelectric energy.
Overview
The Niagara Falls hydrogen refinery will more than double Linde's green liquid hydrogen capacity in the U.S., producing zero-emission hydrogen for industries including aerospace, electronics, and advanced manufacturing.
The site was selected for its access to hydroelectric power and strategic proximity to major Northeast markets, including New York, Boston, and Providence.
Romtec Utilities' pump station plays a critical role in managing in industrial process water required for continuous hydrogen production.
Key system features
Romtec Utilities delivered a custom-engineered pump station designed for high-performance, durability, and seamless integration with Linde's existing infrastructure.
Key features include:
- 6-foot diameter x 18.5-foot-deep polymer concrete wet well by Armorock, providing corrosion resistance and structural strength.
- Custom top slab design, engineered for structural loads and optimized access
- Duplex 10 HP Goulds 3171 vertical wet well pumps designed for reliability and continuous duty cycles.
- Motor start panel with auxiliary input control, enabling simple and secure integration with Linde's control systems.
These design elements ensure consistent water flow, pressure stability, and long-term performance critical for uninterrupted hydrogen generation.

Hydrogen production via electrolysis demands precise process water management under harsh industrial conditions.
At Niagara Falls, the system needed to withstand corrosive water chemistry, high flow rates, and 24/7 operational requirements while meeting Linde's global engineering standards and ensuring seamless communication with the plant's automated systems.
Solution: Romtec's Custom Solution
Romtec Utilities delivered a custom hydrogen refinery pump station built to perform in demanding conditions.
By combining polymer concrete construction with industrial-grade pump technology, the system achieves maximum corrosion resistance, low maintenance, and operation reliability.
Each component, from the wet well to the control panel, was carefully engineered to integrate into Linde's electrolyzer system, supporting efficient process water management for continuous hydrogen production.
Why Romtec was chosen
Romtec Utilities was selected for this project because of our proven ability to design, manufacture, and deliver complete pump station systems for complex industrial applications.
Our in-house engineering, fabrication, and integration capabilities allowed us to deliver a solution that met all of Linde's specifications, quality standards, and delivery timelines.
