Mt. Rose Wastewater Lift Station in Reno, Nevada

Located in the scenic Truckee River Valley near the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Reno, Nevada (known as "The Biggest Little City in the World") continues to grow and invest in essential infrastructure. Romtec Utilities was proud to partner with engineering firm Stantec, contractor KG Walters, and the Truckee Meadows Water Authority (TMWA) on a critical wastewater lift station for the Mt. Rose Water Treatment Plant. This system supports improved water reliability and helps protect local groundwater on the Mt. Rose Fan, a vital environmental and community resource.

Overview

This wastewater lift station was designed and supplied by Romtec Utilities as a complete, pre-engineered system. Brought to us by Stantec during the design phase, the Mt. Rose lift station became a basis-of-design project. Romtec delivered the full system package to KG Walters and TMWA during the bidding process and continued to support the project through construction and startup. The system plays a key role in supporting operations at the Mt. Rose Water Treatment Plant, enhancing the resilience of the region's water infrastructure.

Key system features include:

  • Wet Well5-foot inner diameter, 13.66-feet deep.

  • Pumps: Two 2-horsepower Ebara submersible pumps.

  • Flow Rate: 76 GPM.

  • Total Dynamic Head: 21'.

  • Control: Alternator relay with Nolta MS1 float sensors (4 total).

  • Inlet Design: Drop bowl assembly to reduce turbulence.

  • System Type: Wastewater lift station package with full engineering and startup support.

Challenge: Designed with the environment and dependability in mind

Due to the sensitive nature of groundwater on the Mt. Rose Fan and the need for high reliability at the water treatment plant, the system required careful design to prevent disruption from turbulence inside the wet well. Wastewater entering at high flow rates can cause turbulence that impacts pump cables, floats, and other components critical to reliable operation. Given the plant's importance to regional water supply and environmental health, dependable system performance was a top priority.

Solution: Adding a drop bowl assembly

Romtec Utilities designed a customized wastewater lift station that addressed both hydraulic needs and operational stability. The addition of a drop bowl assembly was a key solution, minimizing turbulence by guiding inflow downward and protecting sensitive components like float switches and cables. This simple, yet effective, feature ensures consistent performance and reduces long-term maintenance. With collaborative input from Stantec, KG Walters, and TMWA, Romtec Utilities delivered a robust and dependable pumping solution.
