SPOTLIGHT PROJECT

West Medway II Facility Project Massachusetts

Power Plant Pumping System - Medway, Massachusetts

The Exelon West Medway Generating Station in Medway, Massachusetts, needed a major upgrade to increase power production in the region. As part of this expansion, the plant required four custom pump stations to handle both sanitary wastewater and oily industrial water. Romtec Utilities was chosen to design, supply, and manufacture these systems because of our proven expertise in complex pumping solutions for large-scale industrial projects.

Overview

This project included four unique pump stations:

  • Two sanitary sewer lift stats for wastewater from the plant
  • Two industrial pump stations designed to handle oily wastewater from power generation processes.
Each station was engineered to meet specific flow rates and head conditions, ensuring reliable performance for the plant's operation.

Key system features

  • Weil Submersible Pumps: Selected for their durability and compatibility with the plant's water chemistry.
  • Slicer Pumps: Installed in the sewer lift stations to macerate solids and prevent clogs.
  • Above-Grade Valve Skid: For industrial stations, making maintenance safe and easy.
  • Alternator Control Panels: Configured for all four duplex systems, housed in NEMA 4X stainless steel enclosures for maximum protection.

Challenge: Meeting Specifications of Four Different Pumping Systems

The expansion required four different pumping systems, each with unique specifications. The designs had to meet strict operational standards for Exelon while handling both sanitary and oily wastewater. Speed was critical - systems needed to be fabricated and installed quickly to keep the project on schedule.

Solution: A custom-engineered Romtec Utilities design

Romtec Utilities worked closely with Gemma Power, the general contractor, and Mott MacDonald, the design engineer, to develop custom designs based on site data. Many mechanical assemblies were fabricated at our production yard for fast delivery and installation.
